Energy and Development

The Energy and Development theme focuses on gaps in access to energy, and current and future challenges in terms of key development issues. Energy security and energy access are critical factors for sustainable development. To this effect, the advancement of energy research (in low-carbon or no-carbon energy technologies), development and deployment of energy to improve all aspects of human needs–access to water, lighting, food processing and cooking, health and education, increased agricultural and industrial productivity employment, and transportation. In this development context the following specific sub-themes are covered: energy and water, energy and food security, energy and Millennium Development Goals (MDG), energy and gender issues, and energy and poverty.
